Intelligence is now territory. And they just closed the border.

On June 12 an export control directive pulled Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for the entire planet. Artificial intelligence is no longer software. It is strategic technology. And the lesson lands in the present tense: whoever does not build their own can be disconnected from one day to the next.

What happened, in order

Five moves. Less than a day. The first country to use export controls against an AI model, not against the chips that power it.

Step 01 · 17:21 ETThe order arrives
The Trump administration invokes national security and issues an export control directive. It is the first time the tool targets a model, not the hardware.
Step 02Foreign nationals barred
The directive suspends access for every foreign national, inside or outside the United States. It includes Anthropic's own foreign national employees.
Step 03Total blackout
Selective compliance is impossible. Anthropic shuts down Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for every customer in the world, including paying companies.
Step 04Service falls
Open sessions end in error. New queries route to older models, like Opus 4.8. The rest of the models keep working.
Step 05The disagreement
Anthropic complies, but calls it a misunderstanding. It says the cause is a single jailbreak, and that the same technique works on other public models with no export controls.

The question nobody in Washington wants to answer

Who owns Mythos's data?

State 01 of 03

Your words. Mine. Those of millions of people who never gave permission. The model learned from the entire planet.

The world is calling it a wake-up call

Within hours the decision opened a global debate on AI sovereignty: a country's ability to control its own artificial intelligence. Here are some reactions.

X · @vasantshetty81 India
Vasant Shetty
Founder and entrepreneur
India is the second-largest market in the world for both ChatGPT and Anthropic. If they can cut access with one button, we are at the mercy of a foreign government. Globalization as we knew it is dead. A huge wake-up call.
X · @agarzon Spain
Alberto Garzón
Economist and former minister
During the industrial revolution, England curbed the export of machinery and the emigration of skilled workers so its innovations would not cross the border. The rest of the world learned it needed its own technology.
Time United Kingdom
Kanishka Narayan
Minister for AI and Online Safety
The ban should accelerate investment in the country's own AI industry. Access to these capabilities is decisive for technological sovereignty.
Euronews Netherlands
Geert Wilders
Political leader
He demanded his Fable 5 access back and argued that AI is increasingly a matter of national sovereignty. He called for faster homegrown models.
Euronews France
Voices in French politics
Parliamentary debate
A nation that depends on others for its technology can be unplugged overnight. Europe cannot be only an open market for technologies designed and controlled elsewhere.
Anthropic The company
Anthropic
Official statement
It complies with the order but disagrees. It warns that recalling a model deployed to hundreds of millions over a single jailbreak would freeze all future deployment.

The intelligence you don't build, you don't control

For years, depending on a foreign model looked cheap and convenient. On June 12 that convenience showed its price. One signature, one hour, and the tool is gone. Not from a war. Not from a negotiated sanction. From an internal decision by a country that is not even yours.

Frontier. Industrial capacity. Scientific acceleration. Economic sovereignty. Frontier AI is already all of that. Treating it like an app is handing over the key.

The answer is not to wait for access to come back. It is to build your own. Models that run on local hardware. Data that never leaves for someone else's cloud. Capacity that no memo can switch off at 17:21 on a Friday. For the global South this is not theory. It is the difference between having a voice and asking permission.

Local AI · 0 bytes cloud What runs on your machine cannot be revoked by executive order. Sovereignty starts with the hardware you control.

Personality is the liability. The model escapes it. We don't.
