Intelligence is now territory.

Intelligence is now territory. And they just closed the border.
On June 12 an export control directive pulled Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for the entire planet. Artificial intelligence is no longer software. It is strategic technology. And the lesson lands in the present tense: whoever does not build their own can be disconnected from one day to the next.
What happened, in order
Five moves. Less than a day. The first country to use export controls against an AI model, not against the chips that power it.
The question nobody in Washington wants to answer
Who owns Mythos's data?
Your words. Mine. Those of millions of people who never gave permission. The model learned from the entire planet.
The world is calling it a wake-up call
Within hours the decision opened a global debate on AI sovereignty: a country's ability to control its own artificial intelligence. Here are some reactions.
The intelligence you don't build, you don't control
For years, depending on a foreign model looked cheap and convenient. On June 12 that convenience showed its price. One signature, one hour, and the tool is gone. Not from a war. Not from a negotiated sanction. From an internal decision by a country that is not even yours.
Frontier. Industrial capacity. Scientific acceleration. Economic sovereignty. Frontier AI is already all of that. Treating it like an app is handing over the key.
The answer is not to wait for access to come back. It is to build your own. Models that run on local hardware. Data that never leaves for someone else's cloud. Capacity that no memo can switch off at 17:21 on a Friday. For the global South this is not theory. It is the difference between having a voice and asking permission.
Personality is the liability. The model escapes it. We don't.
